Cats Should Be Banned

by Irish-Le-Feaux @ 2007-05-13 - 08:39:49

Absolutely fed up with the bloody neighbourhood cats creeping round my garden killing and attempting to kill the birds that live in and around it.

Found another pathetic pile of feathers this morning along with more cat scratches in the earth. Now I am normally a pretty much live and let live sort of a bloke but this really annoys me. Nationally, our garden birds are in decline and despite our best efforts to provide them with what they need we are constantly being thwarted by these murderous bags of fur.

Why do people have cats anyway? They are not pets as such. Why should they be allowed to roam around without any restrictions, dogs arent? They will settle anywhere that they are given food. They have no loyalty whatsoever.

I reckon that you should be able to deal with any cat that comes onto your property in any way you feel fit. At this moment in time an air rifle is favourite. They can devastate wildlife and very often do.

Now I know this will annoy many people who keep cats. I would say if you must have them then keep them under control. Let them crap and pee on your property and not somebody elses and stop them attacking defenceless wild life. If you can't then don't keep them.

I could have said all that about pussies. I stop short of the air rifle bit. Now those big Soaker Water Guns, they are fun.

I put old engine oil and creosote along the tops of fences, go home with that on you feet, or lick it off. :-)

Just their creeping sniffing mannerisms annoy me when they are contemplating scratching up my seeds. Any nice clean disinfectant smells seem to keep them away, as does marking the territory with other pee than their disgusting pong.

Yes us few must stick together, thanks for the invite. I knew you were a 'sod turner'.

Ants, now they are nice clean pets.

Knew you would agree matey. Bloody horrible animals. If you look through my archives you will see a few ant blogs. No problem as long as they don't escape.

*digs out discarded plant catalogue*

There is a plant called the coleus canina which apparently emits a smell which cats can't stand. Discernable to humans only when the plant is touched. Don't know how effective it is.

Also orange peel can be used to keep cats away.

Personally wood pigeons are the pest I love to hate.

Don't have a lot of problem with wood pigeons. Too many cats I reckon. Don't really mind them having a feed. Anything I need to protect I net. Have had a go at the peas on my alltoment though.

Yup, cats are one of my pet hates. However I find that use of a soft-air pistol is very effective - no way its going to be fatal, or even break the skin, but it doesn't half make the buggers jump. As an adjunct, if I see them I hiss at them, which either gets them running or else so disconcerts them that they have to go home to have a lie down. And I have been known to piss in the appropriate areas of the garden. These days it is rare to see any of the pests in the garden, although some are brave enough to go along the top of the fence ... looking over their shoulders all the time.

Yes, I also hate pigeons ... eating the young shoots and crapping enormously to show their appreciation. The air rifle sorts them out (and those damn collared doves) but they breed incessantly.

We haven't seen the muntjak deer - which really knew how to dine well at our expense - since I shot it in the haunch. I reckoned a head shot would wound it too much but probably without killing it, and I wouldn't inflict that upon it. But it really took off will a pellet in the bum!

Yesterday I shot a rabbit in the garden - it was grazing in broad daylight so I guess it was miximatosed and thus I did it a service.

Dogs are fine though.

I wonder how many blogfreinds I'll now lose?

In the natural way of things I would agree with you. These are not wild cats but those that are domesticated and allowed to run about with no control. They do not kill for food.

Yes, they do. Whatever Polo the cat catches, rabbits, mice, voles, birds, he eats. All of it (bones and all!). Sometimes he leaves us a little something as a thank you for the roof over his head, but it doesn't hang around for long when he sees we're not really that interested in eating it! :))

Sorry Kitten but I don't believe you are aware of just how much devastation to the local wildlife your cat does. If he/she is wandering about then dozens of small creatures will be killed by it and not for food either. Okay some may be eaten but very few. Why keep an animal that you know is killing the wildbirds etc.? That is my question.

I have a kitty - Persian - called Peso who is an indoors kitty. I have had many cats before and never let them roam outside. I was too worried about them getting hurt or runnign away.

Irish...I never and I mean never let my animals out of my sight or my control primarily as I would be gutted if something happened to them. A second benefit is that they can't annoy too many people then which btw, would mortify me if people were annoyed/upset with them.

Sigh. If only everybody was as wonderful as your 3M I wouldn't have posted this in the first place because there would have been no need. :DD

Bless. However, responsibility and accountability are four letter words. Most folks do not understand the meaning of the words.

My Grandma used to tell me this tale from the war. How true it is I don't know but she wasn't one for telling lies so I've always beleived it.

There were a lot of Hungarian refugees placed in Wakefield during the war. Not long after they arrived, locals started to notice first strays and then pet moggies were going missing all over town. It got to the point where there were so many reports the police were forced to investigate. What they found was quite remarkable. It seems the Hungarians knew that a skinned cat looks identical to a skinned rabbit. Consequently they'd been systamatically rounding up the starys and pets in each area of town, killed em, skinned and gutted them then sold them to local butchers as rabbits. This went on for months until the old bill found out and put a stop to it.

I often asked her if she thought she might have eaten cat meat and always got the same reply - 'Cun't (she had a strong accent) see why ah'm any differant to anyone else living in Wakefield then love so I must a done.

Personally, I was impressed by the ingenuity of the Hungarians.

Anyone wanting the recipie for my Grandmas Goulash should PM me?

Great story Fenners. Your old grandma sounds one funny lady. Not sure I would want to eat cat meat, but I suppose if you did and didn't know about it and you enjoyed it where is the harm?

Our last dog, a border collie called Tina was a great cat hater. She ended up jumping over the 5 foot 10 wall into our neighbours garden/yard about 3 times going after a cat sitting on the top of the wall. After the third time we didn't see a cat anywhere near our walls again.
